Post Traumatic Stress Disorder/Syndrome

Very simply, PTSD refers to the persistent effects a past traumatic event or life situation now takes on our present life experience. Although these effects are numerous and complex, some common symptoms include:

  • Intrusion - nightmares, flashbacks, emotional memories, panic
  • Avoiding the feelings - use of substances or behaviors (i.e. cutting or eating) ) to help deal with painful feelings or memories
  • Negative mood - depression, anxiety and anger
  • Relationship difficulties

Although trauma is often a single event in our lives, I am also convinced that long term exposure to an abusive situation (family, marriage, work) can have the same impact as an identifiable traumatic event.

Although PTSD is a very treatable condition, many people with PTSD symptoms do not seek help because of shame, hopelessness or they simply do not believe trauma counselling can help. Left untreated, PTSD symptoms can significantly disrupt our lives and impair our sense of well being.
